The community of Oakfield, ME is located in Aroostook County between the towns of Smyrna to the west, and Linneus to the east. The area is predominately working forest and farmland. Oakfield is a small community of 682 residents. There is a grocery store, a couple of gas stations, and a diner in the small town. The largest employer in the town is Katahdin Log Homes. They are a manufacturer of cedar log homes. The community of Houlton to the north is where more shopping, dining and healthcare can be obtained. The town of Oakfield is the site of one of Maine’s wind farms. The project benefits local residents with lower property taxes.
This area is quiet and residents have a close connection to the forests and farmland. They work in and upon these areas, and when the work is done this is also where they play. Numerous streams, ponds and lakes are close by to try your hand at catching native brook trout, landlocked salmon or smallmouth bass. The dense forest and field edges are where you may catch sightings of moose, bear and white tail deer. Ruffed grouse, snowshoe hares and other forest animals are found here. Frequent sightings of eagles and osprey soaring overhead are common.
ATV and snowmobile enthusiasts can explore the vast trail system through the millions of acres of northern Maine forest. The ITS and ATV trails can be accessed just a short distance from the property.
Although the property has no water frontage, it does benefit from a Right of Way easement that provides access to nearby Skitacook Lake. The lake is a warm water fishery of 435 acres in size. It has a very good population of white perch and chain pickerel. Much of the shoreland of this lake is in conservation easement which protects the watershed and limits activities on the land surrounding the lake. In addition to the access to Skitacook Lake, the East Branch of the Mattawamkeag River is accessible from many points and provides great canoe trips thru the area. The Mattawamkeag has trout, salmon, and small mouth bass. The woodlands surrounding the Mattawamkeag are predominantly working forest with limited development. There are several camp sites along it that make overnight canoeing adventures easy to plan and enjoy.
